Whose are Our Phone Numbers?

The latest local elections in Montenegro have raised serious questions on data protection issues.

An interesting occurrence happened in the days leading up to the local elections in Montenegro, held on October 23, 2022, when sending SMS messages to numerous citizens by different political parties, raising a number of data privacy questions:

  1.  where have the political parties received the citizen’s numbers from,
  2. is the right to citizen’s privacy at stake here,
  3. is a phone number private data, as well as others?

Comprehensive analysis of the topics, especially when a telephone number is used for the purpose of leading political campaigns, are provided by our colleagues Ivan Miloševic, Partner in JPM Janković Popović Mitić, and Alma Karadjuzovic Đinđinović Senior Associate in Vukmirović Mišić law firm-JPM Partner.
